  • Update time, again

A new update is in place.
Since I let you guess last time, I'll include here the changes from the previous update too:
    - Overall stability improvements. It becomes harder and harder to find bugs smile
    - You can edit your own comments made on photos/blogs/profiles (js and non-js solutions)
    - The owner of a photo/blog/profile can delete any comment made there
    - Added smilies to all user generated content (blogs/comments/profile fields/messages). Just the rendering part, you don't have a smiley select box yet but you can write them manually.
    - You can now see the date of the comments
    - Site news rendered in html on the home page and rss feed.
    - The link in the message notification telling you that you have a new comment on your blog/photo/profile takes you directly to that comment instead of the blog/photo/profile.
    - Comments are shown even if you are not logged in.
    - The name of the site started to change ... read more

  • Latest update: what it does and why should I care?

Ok, new update is in place on this site and sent to beta testers. It's not the last before release as I previously said because I'd like to have more time for tests for the current changes but no new bugs have appeared and we even closed most of the bugs in the bug tracker.

    This one was pretty important:
    - all html pages are XHTML 1 strict compliant.
    - updated the member icons: they are a bit bigger and you can see the difference between online and offline members easier.
    - added rss feed for latest comments.
    - added rss feed for latest blogs - this will probably be used as the main rss feed of the site.
(more rss feeds are planned as an update later, after the final release: latest members, custom search feeds, etc).
    - added a widget for latest comments that will display in the left column when reading a post.
    - the package manager (which is the 8th wonder of the world smile ) can now work with unified diffs. Useful to update your scripts without overwriting your changes.
    - when using ... read more

  • How to create a new skin the easy way

In this first tutorial we'll explain what a skin is and how to create a new skin for your site.

Once you purchased and installed Etano community builder on your server, the next step should be changing the default look&feel so your site would look differently than the rest. You could make changes to the default skin directly but it is preferable to create a new skin and make changes there so you could later compare the two or even switch between them if needed.
Also, you will need a new skin if you want to have your site in 2 languages: a skin would be for the first language, the second skin for the second language. Of course, you could have any number of languages on your site, not only 2.

A skin is made up from 2 parts:
     1. The html files (and graphics and styles).
     2. The language files with translations of every message of the application.

To help you create a new skin we made a helper plugin that will take one of your existing skins and clone it.
Not only that but will also ... read more

  • Upcoming Features for Your Community

Just wanted to let you know about what we've been working on lately:
    - I previously announced that we have video support in Etano in the form of "My Videos" - a feature like the existing "My Photos". Well, we've now added support for videos in comments and blog posts. We've created a new bbcode button which you can use to enter the video sharing code. I know some of you want this feature.
    - View the IP addresses used by members in their profile (in admin).
    - Alertpay integration is complete, we just need to test it a bit and we'll release it.
    - Unified cache system. There's only one cache folder now, independent of the skins. We had a cache folder in the root folder and then a cache folder for each skin. It was difficult to manage and not very scalable. Now, for those concerned with speed and optimization you can keep the cache folder on a separate disk or even ... read more

  • last update before beta

One more update to go and we switch to beta. I know I said we'll switch at the begining of the week but we were unable to. There was a last minute issue that delayed us (and still needs attention).
The online/offline icon is now displaying the correct information and the alt/title attributes of images/links will tell you if the member is online or offline (where possible).
There are 5 features remaining for the next update and we're done:
    1. the installer. Testing on this demo site is possible without installer but in order to test it on your own server we need to create the installer.
    2. subscriptions/payments handling - that's the problem that delayed us. There are some situations that weren't properly handled like, for example, what happens when a new subscription is purchased/payment made while another subscription is active.
    3. favorites delete scripts
    4. db backup scripts in admin panel
    5. db optimization script. That's something we have to do to keep the database ... read more

For the moment I am in the process of relocating to Germany and the rest of the team has taken their holidays. Please excuse the lack of support and the slow answering time.

  • Version 1.13 of Our Networking Script is Released

After a long wait we have finally released Etano Community Builder v1.13.
It's a huge release and filled with goodies for you. We marked it as beta for now but I think it is pretty stable. We will keep testing it over the next few days.
New customers can purchase either v1.13beta or the stable v1.12 from the purchase page.
Current customers of Etano have already been given access to v1.13 so they could test it if they wanted.
There's no automatic patch available to upgrade you from 1.12 to 1.13 yet but we will create it soon.
So to download v1.13 just login into your datemill account (or go to your admin panel - package manager - check for updates) then click on the "My Licenses" link on the left then on the little P icon next to your license and there you will see the beta, ... read more

  • A Review of the Previous Weeks

There's been some time since my last development news so I thought I should bring everyone not involved in the forum up to date.

We had a week of delay because my credit card was "hacked" and all money taken from it.
Since I am such a control freak, development was slow without me around.

To solve the problem of the private member items (photos, blogs, videos, etc) which is an underdeveloped feature right now I proposed a simple solution to our customers: friends should have access to private items, others should not. Of course, this lead to 3 pages of answers over 2 days and the discussion still going strong. Opinions are split but most appear to agree with a default simple solution which could later be expanded with an addon for Etano community builder. Social network ... read more
